Abstract

The paper describes the issue of an understudied phenomenon of rapid phase transition (RPT) of liquefied natural gas in case it is released into water: due to a lack of a physic-mathematical model of underwater RPT it is impossible to get qualitative risk assessment of LNG releases into water. The authors analyzed the history of LNG-tanker failures, described the main reasons of the occurrence their failure and analyzed publicly available information about the LNG RPT phenomenon.
